The jump from MYP to DP math is widely considered one of the steepest academic climbs in secondary education. In the MYP, students are encouraged to explore. In the DP, they are hit with high-stakes external exams that account for up to 80% of their final grade. Suddenly students face internal assessments (IAs), strict criterion-based rubrics, external exams worth up to 80% of their grade, and the AA vs AI decision (Analysis & Approaches or Applications & Interpretation).
When a student begins to slip in IB math, it is rarely because they “aren’t good at numbers.” More often, it’s because:
• They missed a foundational concept in algebraic manipulation or trigonometry three terms ago, and now everything built on top of it feels shaky !
• They don’t know how to translate their thinking into the specific command terms that IB examiners look for.
• They feel too intimidated to ask “silly” questions in front of their peers at school.
While online platforms have their place, they lack the physical presence needed to read a student’s micro-expressions. You cannot see the exact moment a student’s face is clouded with doubts over a calculus problem through a webcam.
